Xwiki.com - Task Manager Application not working

Hello,
we are evaluating to use Confluence or XWiki. No offense, but Confluence works like a charm and out of the box. XWiki feels very much like a construction site. The price is the same for both tools, but I like the open source approach from XWiki.
I use a trial account at xwiki.com. Task managing is very important for us, but that isnt working at all.

We use the Task Manager Application.

  1. I can not move the tasks in the Kanban board. Is that the right behavior?
  2. The right sidebar shows no due tasks.
  3. There is no way to create projects. The administration page only shows style settings.

Most likely I am doing something wrong.

thanks
Jochen

Sorry you’re having problems with this extension. Note that it’s not an extension supported by the XWiki Dev team. See “developed by” on https://extensions.xwiki.org/xwiki/bin/view/Extension/Task%20Manager%20Application . Those 2 developers are no longer active so I guess this extension has not been tested / worked on for a while.

Well, XWiki is open source and free and so is the Task Manager extension you mentioned ( https://extensions.xwiki.org/xwiki/bin/view/Extension/Task%20Manager%20Application ).

So no, it’s definitely not the same price

I don’t use this extension but no it doesn’t seem right, since the goal of Kanban is to move stuff around

Maybe there’s some incompatibility issue with the version of XWiki you’re using and the version of the Task Manager you use. Someone would need to test this.

Latest tests I see are on https://extensions.xwiki.org/xwiki/bin/view/Extension/Task%20Manager%20Application#HTestedon

You could check existing issue raised fro this extension at https://jira.xwiki.org/projects/TASKMAN/issues/TASKMAN-83?filter=allopenissues

Feel free to open new issues too. Maybe someone will have a go at fixing them.

If you really need this extension, one option you have is to contact one of the companies offering professional support for XWiki, see https://www.xwiki.org/xwiki/bin/view/Main/Support#HProfessionalSupport

Thanks

It’s the expected behavior AFAIK. It’s just a Kanban “view” right now.

BTW regarding Kanban I see there’s this macro too: https://extensions.xwiki.org/xwiki/bin/view/Extension/Kanban%20Macro/

Not sure it can be integrated easily with the Task Manager app though.

Sure its the same price. Confluence cloud costs me 10 bucks each month, same goes for Xwiki.com.
But yes, Confluence has a very good task managing system, what XWiki not have. So XWiki.com seams very overpriced.

I thought the Task Manager is still develped, because of that:

I think that is now what we are looking for. We need a ready to use solution.

thanks

I think there’s a confusion. You are here on the xwiki open source project (forum.xwiki.org). This is not xwiki.com  You can definitely install XWiki for free on your own servers. XWiki is free! This is not the case for Confluence.

Aside: I think we don’t live in the same world if you think that 10 euros / month for 10 users is overpriced. At this price I doubt that XWiki SAS makes any money at all.

You should also know that XWiki SAS has been sponsoring developers to build the XWiki software for years (for 14 years actually) and all the money it makes goes back to the open source software (that the majority of users, i.e. 99% of XWiki users uses for free). When you give money to XWiki SAS you help the XWiki open source projects and allows it to continue.

BTW re Confluence, I don’t know what task manager you’re talking about since i don’t know Confluence well. If you’re talking about https://marketplace.atlassian.com/apps/1219646/task-manager-for-confluence?hosting=server&tab=pricing it seems to cost 10 euros/month for 10 users just for the extension. Is that correct?

PS: For the relationship between XWiki SAS and the XWiki open source project, see http://sandbox.xwiki.org/xwiki/bin/view/FAQ/What+is+the+relationship+between+XWiki+SAS+and+the+XWiki+open+source+project

This is good and I can only agree

Now back to the issue, what you could do is to report the issue in jira and describe precisely the versions you used and the steps you took to get the problems.

Sorry, I didn’t understand what you meant by “what we’re looking for”. Could you explain?

Thanks and have a great wekeend

that’s cool.

We don’t use any plugins with confluence. Confluence comes with a very clever task manager out of the box.
https://confluence.atlassian.com/doc/add-assign-and-view-tasks-590260030.html

But I don’t wanted to start a C vs X discussion. I just wanted to tell what and why I want to try XWiki.

Agreed. And I’m also interested in improving XWiki. Right now the best solution we have for task management is https://extensions.xwiki.org/xwiki/bin/view/Extension/Task%20Manager%20Application

@ilie.andriuta mentioned to me today that he’ll test it once XWiki 10.10 has been released to see how it behaves. Would be great if you could checked open issues at https://jira.xwiki.org/projects/TASKMAN/issues/TASKMAN-83?filter=allopenissues and added new ones if none of the existing ones match what you’re experiencing. This will allow Ilie to try to reproduce the problems you’re facing.

I’ve also found this extension https://extensions.xwiki.org/xwiki/bin/view/Extension/Todo%20Macro but it’s even less supported (was written by Ludovic a long time ago) and it may be missing features you need.

BTW what features would you need?

thanks

I’ve tested Task Manager Application v2.4.1 on XWiki 10.10 (using mainly Microsoft Edge/ PostgreSQL 10) and I found only one issue (https://jira.xwiki.org/browse/TASKMAN-84 - related to the fact that the entries are created as nested pages), apart from the existing issues (not yet fixed, or fixed in version 2.5 which is not yet released). If you’re experiencing some specific problems or use cases, please open issues at https://jira.xwiki.org/issues/?jql=project%20%3D%20TASKMAN, so we can test and reproduce them. Thanks!
